secret place

when you lead your lover toward that secret place

her caution will render

the breeze cutting

the darkness threatening

and chirping insects shrill and discordant

but remember the letters

crudely carved beside the water

into wooden railings

loosened from the weight of others’

full-bodied embraces

and hide your smile

for the newly spilled treasures

she collects from the dripping moon

will forever remind her of

the cool kiss of the wind

the shield of your body against the night

and songs in the trees
